  • Oreo cookies – the base of your turkey; regular or double-stuffed both work great.
  • Candy corn – use these as the bright, festive tail feathers.
  • Candy eyes – two for each turkey to give them a playful personality.
  • Butterscotch chips – perfect for the turkey’s beak.
  • Vanilla frosting – this will act as your edible “glue” to hold everything together.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1 — Tint the Frosting: Divide the vanilla frosting evenly into two small bowls. To one bowl, add a generous amount of red gel food coloring, and stir until fully blended. You’ll have one bowl of plain frosting and one bowl of red frosting ready to go.

Step 2 — Prep the Piping Bags: Spoon the plain vanilla frosting into one piping bag and the red frosting into another. Snip off just the very tip of each bag — you’ll want small openings so the frosting is easy to control for decorating.

Step 3 — Create the Turkey Feathers: Take one Oreo cookie and gently wedge 5 pieces of candy corn into the cream layer at the top edge to form the turkey’s tail feathers. Press carefully to avoid cracking the cookie.

Step 4 — Add the Eyes and Beak: Use the plain frosting to pipe small dots where you want the eyes and beak to go. Press two candy eyes and one butterscotch chip (point side down) into the frosting dots to create the face.

Step 5 — Make the Gobbler: With the red frosting, pipe a small line next to the beak to form the turkey’s gobbler (or wattle).

Step 6 — Enjoy: Let the frosting set for a few minutes, then serve your turkey Oreo Cookies on a platter or pack them up for Thanksgiving gifts and classroom parties.

Tips for Perfect Turkey Oreo Cookies

  • Use Double-Stuffed Oreos: The extra cream makes it easier to insert the candy corn feathers without breaking the cookie.
  • Room-Temperature Cookies Work Best: Cold Oreos are more likely to crack when you add the candy corn.
  • Go Easy with the Frosting: A small dab is all you need to attach eyes and beaks — too much can make them slide.
  • Work on Parchment Paper: It keeps your workspace clean and prevents cookies from sticking while decorating.

Turkey Oreo Cookies FAQs

Use room-temperature cookies and gently twist the candy corn into the cream layer instead of pushing straight down. If your cookies are too cold, the filling will be stiff and can cause cracking.

Yes! You can make them up to three days in advance. Store them in an airtight container at room temperature. Avoid refrigerating them, since the moisture can soften the cookies and candy.

Replace butterscotch chips with orange or yellow M&Ms for a nut-free version. For dairy-free cookies, use vegan sandwich cookies and plant-based frosting — the design and flavor will be just as fun!

If the frosting is too soft or warm, pop it in the fridge for a few minutes to firm up. Cool frosting gives better control when piping small dots for eyes and beaks.

Make sure your frosting dots are small and thick, not runny. Let the cookies sit for about 10 minutes after decorating so the frosting can set before moving them.

  • Yield20 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 20 Oreo cookies
  • 100 pieces Candy corn
  • 40 candy eyes
  • 20 butterscotch chips
  • 1 container vanilla frosting
  • Red gel food coloring

Instructions

  1. Spoon the vanilla frosting into two small bowls, dividing it evenly between each.
  2. Add a generous amount of red gel food coloring to one bowl and stir until fully combined. Leave the second bowl plain.
  3. Transfer the plain vanilla frosting into one piping bag and the red frosting into a second piping bag. Snip a very small opening at the tip of each.
  4. Take one Oreo cookie and gently wedge 5 pieces of candy corn into the top edge to create the turkey feathers. Repeat with all cookies.
  5. Using the plain frosting, pipe two small dots for the eyes and one dot in the center for the beak.
  6. Press 2 candy eyes onto the frosting dots and place 1 butterscotch chip in the center for the beak.
  7. Using the red frosting, pipe a small gobbler underneath or beside the beak.
  8. Allow the frosting to set for 5–10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For best results, use fresh frosting so the candy sticks easily.
  • If the Oreo filling loosens while inserting candy corn, add extra frosting for support.
  • Store cookies in a single layer for best appearance.
