Some of my favorite memories come from gathering the grandkids around the kitchen table in October. We spread out a tray of Oreos, bowls of pretzel sticks, and a little dish of candy eyes, and before long the room is full of giggles and sticky fingers.

These Halloween Oreo cookies are just the kind of treat kids love to make because they can do most of it themselves. They twist, tuck, and press until each cookie has its own personality, some with crooked legs, others with eyes looking in every direction. That’s part of the fun, and honestly, it’s what makes them so special.

I’ve come to think of these cookies less as a recipe and more as a tradition. Every year, the spiders show up on our Halloween table, and every year they bring the same joy. If you’d like a treat that’s simple, festive, and memory-making all at once, this is the one to try.

Why Oreo Spiders Make the Best Halloween Treats

  • Quick and no-bake: These Oreo cookies are no-bake Halloween treats that come together in just minutes with simple pantry staples.
  • Kid-friendly: A true Halloween dessert for kids, they’re easy enough for little hands to assemble with Oreos, pretzel sticks, licorice candy, and candy eyeballs.
  • Perfect for sharing: Whether it’s a classroom Halloween party or a neighborhood get-together, these cookies are easy to make in large batches and always disappear fast.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Ingredients for Oreo Spider Cookies on a marble surface including Oreos, licorice ropes, candy eyeballs, and black icing in glass bowls.
  • Double-Stuffed Oreos – The extra creme filling makes it easy to add the spider legs and helps hold everything together.
  • Licorice ropes – Cut into small pieces to create the spider legs.
  • Eyeball candies – Give each spider its spooky personality.
  • Black icing – Used to attach the candy eyes to the cookies.

How to Make Oreo Spiders

Step 1: Prep Your Workspace. Line a baking sheet or your work surface with parchment paper.

Step 2: Cut the Licorice. Using kitchen scissors or a sharp knife, cut the licorice ropes into 1-inch pieces. Set them aside until you’re ready to assemble the spiders. Each Oreo will need 8 licorice pieces for the legs.

Step 3: Separate the Oreos. Carefully twist apart each Double-Stuffed Oreo, trying to keep the creme filling attached to one side of the cookie. Work gently to prevent the cookies from breaking.

Step 4: Add the Spider Legs. Place 4 licorice pieces on each side of the creme filling, gently pressing them into the filling to secure them. Once all 8 legs are in place, carefully replace the top half of the Oreo and lightly press it down to hold everything together.

Step 5: Attach the Eyes. Using the black icing, pipe or dab two small dots onto the top of each Oreo. Place the eyeball candies onto the icing and gently press them into place.

Step 6: Serve and Enjoy. Allow the icing to set for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy immediately, or store the Oreo spiders in an airtight container until you’re ready to serve them.

Tips for the Best Oreo Spider Cookies

  • Use Double-Stuffed Oreos whenever possible. The extra creme filling makes it much easier to insert the licorice legs and keeps them securely in place.
  • Cut all of the licorice ropes before you begin assembling the spiders. Having everything prepped ahead of time makes the process quicker and less messy.
  • Allow the icing to set for a few minutes before serving or storing. This helps the candy eyes stay attached and keeps the spiders looking their best.

Variations

  • Switch up the legs: Licorice ropes are traditional, but pretzel sticks add a salty crunch and Twizzler Pull ’n’ Peel makes chewy spider legs kids love.
  • Change up the eyes: If you can’t find candy eyeballs, try mini chocolate chips, M&Ms, or even a dot of black icing for a simple substitute.
  • Play with the filling: Regular Oreos are great, but Halloween Oreos with orange filling make these spiders extra festive.

Storage & Leftover Tips

  • Room temperature is best: Keep Oreo Spider Cookies in an airtight container at room temperature. They’ll stay fresh and crisp for up to 2 days.
  • Avoid the fridge: Refrigerating them can make the cookies soften too quickly and the licorice or pretzel legs lose their texture.
  • Make ahead for parties: These are perfect for a classroom Halloween party or family gathering because you can assemble them the night before. They hold up beautifully.
  • Travel tip: If you’re bringing them to a party, layer parchment paper between cookie layers in a container so the candy eyes don’t pop off during the trip.
  • Leftovers (if you have any): These cookies tend to disappear fast, but if you do have a few extras, enjoy them within a couple of days while the textures are still crisp.
