Why You’ll Love These 4th of July Cookies
I’ve made these patriotic cookies for everything from pool parties to late-night fireworks gatherings, and they always disappear faster than expected. After testing several versions, I found that slightly underbaking them keeps the centers soft and chewy while still giving the edges that perfect bakery-style texture.
These are the kinds of cookies people grab “just one more” of before heading back outside.
Ingredients You’ll Need

- Unsalted butter, softened – Creates rich, soft, bakery-style cookies
- Brown sugar – Adds moisture and gives the cookies a chewy texture
- White sugar – Helps create lightly crisp edges
- Large eggs – Adds structure and richness
- Vanilla extract – Gives the cookies warm classic flavor
- All-purpose flour – Provides structure while keeping the cookies soft
- Baking soda – Helps the cookies rise slightly and stay tender
- Salt – Balances sweetness and enhances flavor
- Red, white & blue M&Ms – Adds festive patriotic color and chocolate crunch
How to Make 4th of July Cookies
1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and line two baking trays with parchment paper to help the cookies bake evenly and prevent sticking.
2. In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter, brown sugar, and white sugar together for about 2–3 minutes until the mixture looks light, fluffy, and pale in color.

3. Beat in the eggs and vanilla extract until fully combined, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed so everything mixes evenly.

4. Add the flour, baking soda, and salt, then mix just until a soft cookie dough forms, being careful not to over mix or the cookies may turn dense instead of soft and chewy.

5. Gently fold in the red, white, and blue M&Ms, reserving a small handful to press onto the tops of the cookies before baking for a more festive bakery-style look.
6. Scoop the cookie dough onto the prepared baking trays, spacing the dough balls evenly about 2 inches apart to allow room for spreading.

7. Bake for 10–12 minutes, until the edges are lightly set and the centers still look slightly soft, which gives the cookies their perfectly chewy texture once cooled.
8. Let the cookies cool on the baking tray for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely, allowing them to finish setting without over baking.
