I’ve always loved sweet and salty snacks, and this one quickly became a favorite in our house. There’s just something about freshly popped popcorn drizzled with melted candy that’s hard to resist. That crunchy texture paired with a sweet coating makes it nearly impossible to stop grabbing handfuls.

For a fun 4th of July twist, I popped up a batch of popcorn and drizzled it with red, white, and blue candy melts, then finished it off with festive M&Ms and a sprinkle of stars and stripes. It’s colorful, easy to make, and perfect for sharing at any summer gathering.

How to Make 4th of July Popcorn

Start by popping your corn. You can use an air popper and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the 1/2 cup of kernels, or go the simple route with the microwave.

Next, prepare the candy melts. Place the red, white, and blue melts in separate microwave-safe bowls. Heat each for 1 minute, stir, then continue in 30-second intervals until smooth. Transfer each color to a piping bag or zip-top bag and snip a small corner for easy drizzling.

Spread the popcorn onto a large parchment-lined baking sheet. Drizzle the melted candy over the top in a back-and-forth motion. It doesn’t have to look perfect. That casual drizzle is what makes it fun.

While the candy is still warm, sprinkle the M&M’s and festive sprinkles over the popcorn so they stick. Let it sit at room temperature for 15 to 20 minutes until the coating hardens. If you’re short on time, you can place the tray in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes.

Once set, break into clusters and serve. You can pile it into a big bowl or portion it into small bags for a party. Just be ready. It goes fast.

Tips for 4th of July Popcorn

  • Use fresh popcorn: Pop the kernels right before making the recipe for the best flavor and crunch.
  • Short bursts: Microwave the chocolate in 30-second intervals, stirring in between each round to ensure it melts smoothly and evenly.
  • Fix seized chocolate: If your chocolate becomes thick or clumpy, stir in about 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil per ounce to help smooth it out again.
  • Line the pan: Line your baking sheet with parchment paper, foil, or a nonstick mat to prevent sticking and make cleanup easy.
  • Choose good chocolate: Use high-quality white chocolate for the best flavor and smooth melting.
