4th of July Popcorn

Recipe by Rebekah Winscott

This 4th of july popcorn is a quick and festive sweet snack made with red, white, and blue candy melts, crunchy popcorn, and patriotic sprinkles—perfect for parties, BBQs, and holiday celebrations.

  • Total Time30 Minutes
  • Yield6-8 cups 1x

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1/2 cup popcorn kernels
  • 1/4 cup red candy melts
  • 1/4 cup white candy melts
  • 1/4 cup blue candy melts
  • 1/4 cup M&Ms, preferably red, white, and blue
  • 1 tablespoon sprinkles, stars and stripes themed if available

Instructions

  1. Pop the popcorn.
Use an air popper to pop the kernels according to the manufacturer’s instructions, or microwave them in a folded brown paper bag for 2 to 3 minutes until the popping slows.
  2. Prepare the popcorn base.
Spread the freshly popped popcorn onto a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper, then remove any unpopped kernels.
  3. Melt the candy melts.
Place the red, white, and blue candy melts into separate microwave-safe bowls, microwave for 1 minute, stir, then continue heating in 30-second intervals until smooth.
  4. Transfer for drizzling.
Pour each melted candy color into separate piping bags or zip-top bags, then snip a small corner for easy drizzling.
  5. Drizzle the popcorn.
Evenly drizzle the melted red, white, and blue candy melts over the popcorn using a back-and-forth motion.
  6. Add toppings immediately.
Sprinkle the M&Ms and patriotic sprinkles over the popcorn while the candy coating is still melted so they stick.
  7. Let the popcorn set.
Allow the candy to harden at room temperature for 15 to 20 minutes, or refrigerate for about 10 minutes to speed up the process.
  8. Break and serve.
Once set, break the popcorn into clusters and serve in a bowl or portion into individual bags.

Notes

  • Remove any unpopped kernels before adding the candy melts.
  • Melt the candy slowly and stir often so it does not scorch.
  • Add the toppings right away before the melted candy begins to set.
